- The Rochester Fire Department Firefighters Memorial -
| In early 1996, at a Union meeting, it was
brought up that the Union should do something in memory of fallen firefighters. A
committee was formed. Captain Derek Peters, Firefighters Paul LaClair, Joe Burns, Missy
Ayers and Mark Dupuis were on the committee. In approximately three months we decided to put a monument in front of the fire station. We had plans drawn up showing the monument and three flagpoles. We worked the next several months with Steven Roy Monument getting prices, sizes and shapes, ending what you now see. The next step was going to the union meeting with the information and getting their approval. With that in hand, we went to the Fire Chief and began getting ready for the City Council Because it was going to be in front of the station and on City property, we needed their approval. We gave a presentation and advised that the union was paying for all expenses. There would be no cost to the City. The following month, the Council gave their approval and the monument and flag poles were ordered. We began the ground work and over the next three months, had everything in order and waited for the monument to arrive. On October 4, 1997, the monument was put into place with the unveiling on October 5,1997 which was the start of Fire Prevention Week. The Committee would like to thank the following for their support...The City of Rochester City Council, Rochester Public Buildings and Public Works Departments, A.J. Cameron Sod Farms, Norm Vetter, Brox Concrete, VFW Post and American Legion Post #7. A special thanks to Steven R. Roy Monument for all this his help. |
